Religiosity is a natural need of humans - an innate, instinctive necessity. We refer to needs as natural, instinctual, and innate when they are not controlled by logic and will. They are inherent, as lawful requirements, in the functioning of biological existence.
Psychology summarizes the two drives that determine, with a character of necessity, the psychosomatic constitution of humans: it speaks of the drive for self-preservation and the drive for procreation. Religiosity is inferred as an expression of the drive for self-preservation. It belongs to the reflexes that human nature develops (in automatic, involuntary psychosomatic reactions) in order to sustain survival.
Religiosity is analogous to hunger, thirst, fear of illness and pain, and terror before death. Why? A preliminary justification, certainly schematic but not arbitrary, states: Humans see their existence threatened by forces or factors they cannot control.
Their own physical powers are not enough to prevent illness, pain, or death. Therefore, they resort to inventions that offer them hope of protection, self-suggestion of certainty: They regard the causes of the threats that their nature cannot control as supernatural, and additionally, they personify them. This means they integrate them into the web of logical relationships they know how to handle effectively.
