The discussion regarding the methodology of Classical Studies traces back to the birth of classical philology in Hellenistic Alexandria: scholars, poets, and grammarians engaged for the first time in systematic efforts to restore and interpret ancient texts.
The contribution of the learned men of the Byzantine era was crucial, as they preserved a significant portion of ancient literature through the copying of manuscripts. Since then, the field of Classical Philology has evolved; however, it continues to exist on the threshold between the old and the new.
Some of the questions that occupy philologists today are the same or similar to those studied by the Alexandrian scholars: for example, what methods can we employ to restore an ancient text? What steps must we follow to arrive at a reliable text that reflects the original as faithfully as possible? How do we approach ancient texts that survive in fragments? What methods do we use to draw conclusions about the works to which they belong?
Meanwhile, in recent years, the field of Classical Studies has significantly expanded; the need for interdisciplinarity and close collaboration among different scientific fields (philology, history, philosophy, epigraphy, etc.) is increasingly highlighted.
A multitude of interpretive issues are also raised regarding the relevance of ancient texts and the importance of studying ancient culture in general: can ancient texts resonate in the modern era? What theoretical approaches are we called to utilize in order to highlight the relevance of ancient literature?
This volume attempts to address the aforementioned questions by providing an overview of some contemporary methodological reflections in the field of Classical Studies. It gathers eighteen studies that pertain to the following areas: critical editions, ancient texts that survive in fragments, narrative approaches, interdisciplinary views for the study of ancient culture and archaeology, and the reception of classical literature.
The authors of the volume examine the ways in which old questions can be reconsidered with new methodological tools or pose new questions that they answer with the help of contemporary methodological approaches. This publication thus reflects the growing interest in Classical Studies through ongoing and renewed reflection on methodological issues.
