Description & Specifications

Publishers and printers, authors and translators, supporters and opponents of the Enlightenment, the Greek printing houses of Venice, the Patriarchal Printing House of Constantinople; and more: subscriptions and subscribers, editions, bibliographic issues (with Emile Legrand's major work standing out), the reading public and the types of books, from popular pamphlets and religious prints to the modern scientific book: Through the pages of this volume, an entire world emerges, largely unknown and captivating, not only for researchers but generally for the book lover and the bibliophile.

The work was designed by Philippos Iliou himself; the title is also his. The volume, with editorial care by Anna Matthaiou, Stratis Bournazou, and Popi Polemi, gathers small and larger texts of his related to the Greek book - most of them inaccessible and hard to find. Some are revised by the author and others are in their original form (the author did not manage to complete, as he wished, this new processing), yet the studies in this volume clearly outline the framework of a social history of the Greek book and the Greek-speaking reading public from the period of Ottoman rule to the 19th century, with a focus on detail and the synthetic skill that characterize the entirety of the author's work.

The bibliography and history of the Greek book has been one of Philippos Iliou's primary research areas. His contribution to expanding our knowledge as well as the research horizons in this field has been so decisive that today it is impossible to talk about the history of the Greek book and reading without mentioning his work.

Philippos Iliou (1931-2004), son of Ilias Iliou and Eleftheria Kaldi, is one of the most important historians of modern Greece. At the same time, having been integrated early into the left movement, he served consistently and passionately until the end of his life, embodying the model of the citizen-historian. The bibliography and history of the Greek book, the modern Greek Enlightenment and Korais, the Greek intellectuals of the 20th century (from Glinos, Kordatos, and Zevgos to K. Th. Dimaras), the history of the Greek Left, and the Civil War are some of the main areas where he identified his multifaceted interests.

Through his studies in these fields, he radically renewed our knowledge and opened new paths in Modern Greek studies, shaking established certainties, while at the same time, with his personality and critical spirit, he inspired a multitude of new researchers. F. Iliou was one of the pioneers of the Center for Marxist Research and Studies (1965-1967). He co-founded and co-directed the journal `Ta Historika` since 1983, along with Spyros Asdrachas and Vassilis Panagiotopoulos. He was also the inspirer and president of the Archives of Contemporary Social History, practically implementing the vision of `open archives`.
