Description & Specifications

The loss of vision has a significant effect on the way a person performs various activities, receives information, and generally communicates. Finding alternative methods of communication is essential for their independent living.

In our society, reading and writing, as important means of communication, are cornerstones of independence. For blind individuals, Braille represents capability, independence, and equality. Braille reading and writing skills should provide students with visual impairments access to knowledge, across all areas and at the same level as their sighted peers.

In the book Blindness and Reading - Reading by Touch, fundamental themes related to Braille reading are explored, and methodologies for teaching Greek Braille are proposed. The Braille codes of the English and Greek languages are presented, along with the codes used abroad, writing methods, and production of Braille, the sense of touch, the development of tactile perception, and the perception of Braille through touch.

Key themes concerning reading behavior and its relationship with improving reading speed are developed. Extensive reference is made to emerging literacy and pre-Braille intervention, with approaches for teaching Braille reading presented, as well as the basic methods of word recognition.
