Description

Description

The purpose of this book is to help the reader conduct their own research, whether it is market research, psychometric research, or scientific research, and analyze the research data using the statistical package SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The term "research" refers to the investigation of human relationships or properties of objects, products, etc., which is usually conducted with the help of sampling methods, inside or outside the laboratory. The book is based on the doctrine of "empiricism," which is the dominant doctrine in Anglo-Saxon science of human behavior. According to this doctrine, knowledge is acquired through experimentation, sampling, interviews, or case studies. The application of this doctrine results in the collection of a vast amount of information and data for a specific case or for a commercial enterprise in its genesis or operation.
My experience as an author in teaching courses in Business Statistics, Market Research, and Statistical Packages at the Universities of Dallas, Texas, Johannesburg, South Africa, and the TEI of Athens, Department of Business Administration, taught me that:
a) Students find it difficult to input data into SPSS, transform the data for analysis, and interpret the results that extend over multiple pages, including graphs, etc.
b) Students struggle to select the most appropriate dialog boxes.
c) The results are written in strictly statistical terms, which are difficult for a non-expert to interpret.
d) Students, if they overcome obstacles (a), (b), and (c), have difficulty writing a proper report with the method and results.

My knowledge of the above obstacles faced by students (and many interpreters) compelled me to write the second part of this book, which explains, in simple and understandable steps, the various SPSS programs available to researchers for solving statistical problems in market research and scientific research in general.
Each chapter of Part A of the book includes:
1. A concise theory and the formulas used to solve a problem.
2. A sample solution to an exercise, at least, using the MINITAB package.

Each chapter of Part B of the book includes:
I. A sample solution, with a detailed explanation of the SPSS commands used, in at least one representative example.
2. Statistical interpretation of the results, with detailed reference to statistical theorems, formulas, and definitions.
The chapters of Part B of the book refer not only to topics of univariate statistical analysis, such as Testing Univariate Hypotheses, Goodness of Fit, Analysis of Variance, but also to topics of multivariate statistical analysis, such as Multiple Regression, Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Factor Analysis, Discriminant Analysis, etc.
Problems of Time Series and Reliability are also investigated. Therefore, this book becomes unique today in Greece, with such a wide range of topics in SPSS.

The book is suitable for students of Business Administration, Psychology, Marketing, Health and Welfare Management, Library Science, and for all the laboratories of Universities and Technological Educational Institutes where SPSS is used. (from the author's preface)
