The Nobel Peace Prize-winning global leaders, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, have lived through over fifty years of exile, violence, and oppression. Despite the adversities - or as they themselves say, because of them - the two are among the happiest people in the world.
In April 2015, Archbishop Desmond Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama's residence in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate the latter's eightieth birthday, and to create something together that they hoped would become their gift to humanity. Reflecting on their long and tumultuous lives, they sought to answer a very important question: How can we find joy in a world filled with pain and unnecessary suffering?
For an entire week, the two shared personal stories, exchanged spiritual practices, while constantly joking and teasing each other. This book gives us the rare opportunity to witness their companionship during that remarkable week, from their first meeting to their final farewell.
We see them explore the Nature of True Joy and what prevents us from feeling it - fear, stress, anger, sadness, illness, and death. We learn about the Eight Pillars of Joy, which form the foundation of lasting happiness. We read stories, wisdom insights, and scientific findings, and of course, we practice the Joy Practices.
In this exceptional work, we learn about the pain-filled and turbulent lives of two great leaders, and how they managed to discover the peace, courage, and joy that we all desire for our own lives.
