This book serves as a concise and illustrated introduction to the history of Greece, from the first stirrings of the national liberation movement in the late 18th century to the present day.
In 1830, Greece was the first country in the East to gain its independence, and in 1981 it was the first to become a member of the European Community. The legacy of Orthodoxy and the repercussions of the years of Ottoman domination have left strong marks on modern Greece.
On the other hand, significant historical movements, such as the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution, which greatly influenced Western Europe, largely went unnoticed in Greece, significantly differentiating the historical development and society in the then Greek region compared to its future Western European partners.
Furthermore, for most of its one hundred seventy years of independent existence, many Greeks have lived outside Greek borders, forming large and thriving communities in various parts of the world. These factors add particular interest to the history of a country that is simultaneously Balkan, Mediterranean, and European, whose rich past decisively impacts the present.
