The kanonaki is an instrument whose role in shaping Greek folk music remains unexplored. Despite its undeniable place in Greek organology, its presence has been downgraded for decades, while the literature surrounding its repertoire and musicians is not always adequately documented. This book attempts to outline the position of the instrument in modern Greek music through its participation in the recording of 78 rpm discs, which is the oldest recorded and therefore valuable evidence.

The systematic listening of the pieces, through their digital reissues, allows for an in-depth study of the musical material, highlighting many different aspects of it. It is obvious that, as a musical text, this material is suitable for teaching the instrument. At the same time, the modal and rhythmic analysis are basic tools for accessing this specific repertoire, as well as the chapter of Greek music that it represents.

Specifically, regarding the transcription of the pieces, the author does not rely solely on the use of Turkish notation, which is the most widely used writing code for all similar musical genres, but attempts to clarify the function of its mostly ambiguous symbols. Thus, in order to minimize the gap between the theoretical substance of the alterations and their practical application, numbers were attached to them, which are translated into corresponding frets on the kanonaki. This way, beginners of the instrument are able to understand the complex movements of the notes, which are interpreted as "pulls" and are a fundamental component of melodic behavior.

Finally, this edition is accompanied by the complete information of the reissues used for listening and transcribing the pieces, as well as the labels of the original gramophone records, where possible.
