The 70-degree (70%) alcohol lotion is used as a skin cleanser and mild antiseptic.
Antiseptics are substances that destroy various microorganisms and are used to reduce or completely remove germs that are on the skin and in wounds. The most commonly used skin antiseptic is alcohol (ethyl alcohol or ethanol). It is used for skin application during venipuncture, as well as for removing germs from the hands.
- Destroys bacteria, the mycobacterium tuberculosis, and fungi.
- Effective against certain viruses (e.g., influenza viruses, herpes simplex virus, HIV virus).
- Limited effectiveness on non-enveloped viruses (e.g., hepatitis A and B virus).
- On protozoa.
When the alcohol lotion is left to act for 1 minute, it has been proven to be the most effective method for hand antisepsis. 15 seconds are enough to destroy many germs from the skin and hands. For alcohol to be effective, there must be a prior mechanical removal of germs and organic substances (e.g., fats, blood) from the skin by washing with soap and plenty of water.
Because the use of ethanol causes dryness of the skin, solutions are available in concentrations of 60-95% in combination with emollient substances, such as glycerin. The most commonly used is the 70-degree solution.
For external use only. Not suitable for use in beverage or food preparation.
