Description & Specifications

Pity, respect, and desire are intertwined in this revolutionary novel. The story of the relationship between Constance Chatterley and Mellors, the gamekeeper who worked for her disabled husband, is Lawrence's most controversial novel — and perhaps his most comprehensive and exquisite study of mutual love.

Writing it to liberate entire generations who, as he felt, considered sexual intercourse merely a reprehensible or mechanical act, he said about the book: "I always strive for one thing: to give beauty and value to the sexual relationship, to free it from shame. And with this novel, I crossed every boundary. I find it beautiful, tender, and vulnerable as our naked selves.”

There is no book that celebrates pleasure less than Lady Chatterley's Lover. This is not about how to avoid sin, but about how sexuality can be incorporated into life without losing the power it drew from sin, how it can give us all those things that until now were attributed to love, how sin can be transformed into a means that reveals our very selves.

Lawrence does not wish to be either happy or great; he simply wishes to exist. He considers being a man more important than being an individual. Therefore, the preference for difference is replaced by strong determination: to be a man — as much as possible. That is, to transform sexual consciousness, choosing the most masculine elements, into a guiding system for our lives.
