In the island's defense, Greek gendarmes and many civilians also participated, for which the latter later paid a heavy toll in blood. Creforce did not have air cover or heavy artillery, had minimal armored vehicles, but was supported by the British Royal Navy. Additionally, it had the advantage of intelligence through the Ultra system regarding the manner and exact timing of the German attack, although Freiberg did not take appropriate measures to prevent the capture and use of the airfields. On the other hand, the Germans deployed 22,000 soldiers for Operation "Hermes," with the most significant role played by the men of the 7th Parachute Division. The goal of both sides was to control the airfields at Maleme, Rethymno, and Heraklion, and therefore the most important clashes took place in these areas.
