The two beautiful texts included in this little book, however, do not constitute the memoirs of a naturalist. On the contrary, they aim to highlight the writer's interest in the components of the microcosm. Maeterlinck focuses on the continuous interaction between the human and animal universes. He studies social bees and the domesticated dog in an attempt to understand humanity.

He considers that man, filled with arrogance, exercises power in a universe that he fundamentally does not comprehend. From bees and dogs, man must learn a lesson in humility and prudence – and Nature is what provides him with the interpretative keys.
