With the first of the two words that make up the simple title, Holiness, it denotes that version of sanctity that concerns the present book, while the second word of the title, Narrated, is a passive participle of the verb narrate, which has a double meaning: to tell, to recount, but also to illustrate, themes from the life and tradition of the Church.

Thus, if one considers that ecclesiastical iconography is permanently characterized by a – sometimes poorer and other times richer – narrative quality, it is not difficult to understand that the object of the present study is none other than the way in which the holy sanctity is narrated, through the art of iconography.

The subtitle of the book, from the lives of saints in the images, preannounces the methodology with which the study is developed. In particular, twelve different cases of saints are examined. For each saint, an initial verbal narration of their life is attempted, based on various hagiographies, while subsequently a visual narration of their life is carried out, through specific images.

The subsequent commentary and related conclusions make tangible to the reader and viewer – of the texts and images respectively – what the study strives for: the way in which holiness is narrated.
