Description

The theme of Misunderstanding is the exile of man in a hostile world. The plot is taken from a folk tale. The hero returns to his family and homeland to be murdered by his mother and sister who do not recognize him.

The daughter’s excuse for the murder is to be able to live near the sea and in the strong light. Camus himself was the happiest Mediterranean who got drunk and bathed in the light and the sea. However, the cold crimes will remain an excuse and never a justification.

If the absurd is a rule in the world, Martha is an exception that opposes the rule. The mother who has nothing left to hope for and the current hell is her kingdom, as she says in the first scene of the third act: “I have lost my freedom, hell surrounds me from all sides”. Nevertheless, she will find the courage to escape from her kingdom of hell, rebelling with her suicide.

Crime and punishment. Jan dies like a stranger in his own home. He is murdered due to a misunderstanding. The three characters experience unbearable loneliness. They walk towards death without having understood the meaning of life and without having come to terms with the necessity of death.

All three characters have already committed crimes before they commit the actual crimes. Martha, vainly hoping for sunny lands and the sea along with an ideal love. The mother, tormented by fatigue, while already feeling resigned to life. Jan finally, tortured by nostalgia for his homeland and his loved ones - mother, sister. Symbolic figures that, however, do not lose their substance and character, which is where the particular interest of the work for theater lies.
