The lens support slides forward and backward in a slot on the plate and adjusts up and down and front to back to fit the size of your lens and help with balance. Then, the lens support is tightened with two thumbscrews. The base of the plate has a measuring scale in imperial and metric increments, so you can maintain the same setting each time you mount the camera.
