This study attempts to provide as comprehensive a description and analysis as possible of a universal phenomenon of language, linguistic variety. Its approach highlights, among other things, that the variety of language reflects the variety of society, culture, and the temperament of speakers.
It also reveals that linguistic variety exists when two or more signifiers can express the same signified and when different meanings are expressed in different communication contexts. These two dimensions of linguistic variety complement each other.
The first includes stylistic choices of the speaker to express in their personal style what they want to say, as well as choices influenced by variables such as origin, social status, education, age, gender, profession, etc., whose impact may also be unconscious.
The second dimension of linguistic variety includes linguistically realized manifestations selected by objective criteria dictated by the situational environment.
The aim of the study is to direct the attention of the Greek scientific community towards an important phenomenon of language that has not sufficiently engaged it to date, while also raising public awareness of the significance of linguistic variety as a phenomenon of cultural heterogeneity.
The ultimate goal is to highlight the value of mastering and recognizing linguistic variety both in the field of language teaching and in the field of translation teaching.
