Players alternate between the roles of the coder and the guesser. The coder selects five pegs with any combination from eight available colors. Secretly from the opponent, they place them in special slots, establishing the secret code. The guesser has nine attempts to decode the code. In each attempt, they place the pegs on the board layout in a combination that seems closest to the original. If they fail – they lose. The coder, using white and black pegs, informs the guesser about the correctness of the proposed combinations. The guesser, thus having more information from attempt to attempt, manages to solve the puzzle. After decoding the layout, the players switch roles.
