This dissertation aims to highlight, on one hand, the concept of the good and, on the other hand, the concept of happiness through their dialectical relationship.
The good, according to the definition in the preface of the Nicomachean Ethics, is that which all things, and not just all people, desire, wish for, and strive towards. Although Aristotle’s ethical treatise primarily refers to human goods, the concept of the good as an ontological good encompasses the goods of other beings, such as animals and plants, and represents the affirmation of Being.
All of nature, the entire world, according to Aristotle's teleological perspective, is directed towards the good, that is, towards its appropriate perfection. For Aristotle, the relationship between the good and purpose is given. This is a dialectical relationship. However, the most perfect good seems to be a final purpose.
If there is, however, only one final purpose, then that is the sought good, namely happiness. Happiness is the most perfect attainable good that is always chosen for what it is and never for the sake of some other good.
Thus, happiness as the most perfect good is identified with the unique and absolute end in itself of man as a human being, and it lies in the fulfillment of his appropriate work, the work of him as a rational being, in exercising, in other words, his spiritual and moral powers.
Therefore, happiness is nothing other than the activity of the soul in accordance with virtue, and if there are multiple virtues, then the most paramount happiness is the activity of the soul in accordance with the most significant and complete virtue.
