Professor Georgios E. Mylonas spent some of his most creative years conducting research in the area of the Sanctuary of Eleusis. Unfortunately, the Greek book market did not allow for the immediate translation and circulation of the wonderful book authored by the professor, which was published in English by "Princeton University Press" for the first time in 1961.
At that time, G.E. Mylonas was a professor of prehistoric Greek archaeology, classical Greek art and archaeology, as well as Hellenistic art and archaeology at Washington University, and chairman of the Department of History of Art and Archaeology at the same university. It was the 1960s and 70s, a time when not only were there no investments for the publication of books related to excavations and the history of Eleusis and the Eleusinian Mysteries, but excavations in the sacred area were also halted, presumably due to lack of funding.
Unfortunately, for several decades the efforts of the "Archaeological Society of Athens" did not find the appropriate response from the state authorities. The book is translated and published for the first time in Greek, as the last reprint by "Princeton University Press" in 1971 had long since sold out.
