Plato (427 BC – 347 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher from Athens, a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle. His work - which has survived in its entirety - exerted a tremendous influence on ancient Greek philosophy.
Among other writings, Plato authored the "Apology of Socrates," which is considered to be a relatively accurate account of Socrates' defense in the trial that condemned him to death. The "Symposium," where he discusses the nature of love, "Protagoras," where among other things, he theoretically establishes the principle of "prevention" that does not treat punishment as absolutely "retributive," "Parmenides," and "Theaetetus," where he grounds the objectivity of reason and the idea.
In two lengthy dialogues, "The Republic" and "Laws," he described the ideal state. The entirety of his work places him among the greatest world personalities of all time, with the greatest influence, alongside his teacher, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle.
