Description

If in 2008 we had allowed capitalism to collapse, could it have been replaced today by an authentically free and just society? What would it look like? Who would build it? We are in 2025. Four years after the pandemic, three friends accidentally discover that in 2008, space-time split into two trajectories. Our own. And an Other Now, where the events of 2008 took a completely different turn, leading to a world corresponding to our own but strikingly democratized. Without bosses. Without banks. Without stock exchanges. Without digital giants. Without billionaires. Without state authoritarianism.

The three friends – American Eva, a neoliberal economist, English Iris, a Marxist feminist and constant dissenter, and Cretan Kostas, a genius digital technology engineer who despises the power of Big Tech – study with wide eyes the global tech uprising of 2009-2013 which, in the Other Now, gave birth to the international, post-capitalist conjuncture. They obsessively examine the parallel society where companies are equally owned by all workers, basic income and a fundamental inheritance are rights of every human being, housing is socialized, and markets are freer now that capitalism has died.

However, somewhere along the way, the three friends are faced with a hard decision that presents them with a relentless dilemma. Radical both in form and vision, The Other Now combines science fiction and Platonic dialogue with literature to show that there is an alternative to capitalism, while simultaneously confronting us with the biggest question: How far are we willing to go to achieve it?

“Visionary, provocative, innovative.” Alfonso Cuarón

They said about The Other Now: “A landmark work... The vision of a new society that thinks differently may be the most important thing an artist can offer at this moment.” Brian Eno

“Combining a provocative thought experiment with a deeply innovative science fiction narrative, Yanis Varoufakis asks us to consider how humanity can balance freedom with justice, allowing us, however, to draw our own conclusions.” Alfonso Cuarón

“The Other Now is a post-capitalist manual that simultaneously raises the question: Is overcoming capitalism enough? […] Its reading is a reminder that a terrifying future is not inevitable.” The Monthly

“The Other Now is not only an excellent read – it is an important contribution to the literature of social change.” The Wire

“I highly recommend it. If you are looking for a sense of optimism, a sense of political possibility, this book is very important.” Owen Jones - commentator for The Guardian

“They said about Yanis Varoufakis and the book: ‘Easy to read, deeply human and strikingly original, the book [Talking to My Daughter] with which Varoufakis invites readers to invade the castles of the ‘experts’ of economic orthodoxy and reclaim what belongs to them. A powerful tool for democracy at the right historical moment.’ Naomi Klein

“What he writes about the European crisis reveals universal truths about democracy, capitalism, and social policy…”. The Guardian

“To characterize [the Unconquerable Defeated] as the best testimonial book written about the eurozone crisis would underestimate its significance. It is a shocking denunciation of the current state of Europe and an exciting, inside account of the rationale for reformist policies and their limits, as well as the reasons why this policy continues to be applied.” Adam Tooze

“A very clever man who I think is absolutely right in his fundamental argument about what is happening in Europe.” Martin Wolf, Financial Times

“One of my heroes. As long as there are people like Varoufakis, there is hope.” Slavoj Žižek
