In colostomy the stools are usually solid (formed stools) and thus a closed bag is used. The bag is replaced with a new one twice a day or as directed by medical staff. The amount of stools depends on the location of the stoma. If the stools are watery (and therefore increased in quantity), many colostomates choose an open bag so they can empty it.

Collection systems

• Self-adhesive bags are particularly popular as they are discreet, lightweight, and easy to use. The collection bag and adhesive part form a single system. The bags are placed around the stoma with the help of the adhesive material/part.
• In the 2-piece system, the collection bag and adhesive part (or base) are two separate parts. The base fits around the stoma and then the bag fits onto the base.

The bags can be transparent or opaque and come in different sizes/shapes and adhesive and capacity calibers. There are also options for the type of adhesive. Therefore, it is worth experimenting to find what suits you best and fits your skin and lifestyle.

Diet and stoma

There may be some modifications to your diet depending on the type of surgical stoma. Individuals with colostomy and ileostomy surgery should return to their normal diet after an adjustment period. Introduce foods into your diet little by little each time and monitor the effect of each food on the stoma's function. Chew your food well and drink plenty of fluids. Some less digestible or large coarse foods are more likely to cause blockage problems (such as corn, coconut, mushrooms, nuts, raw fruits, and vegetables).
