Certainly, Constantine Cavafy has entered the pantheon of Greek literature as a poet, as he loved, adored, and fell in love with poetry.
But he could not remain there alone. Cavafy was a poet who, through his pen, summoned the past, whether historically or humanly, with a restless spirit for the dramas of his time. He could not remain unmoved by what was happening around him.
Through this recall, he became a pioneer on the issue of the return of the Parthenon Marbles. This is reflected in two angry articles of his published in March and April 1891, demanding the return of the "Elgin Marbles" from England to Athens, which were a response to an article by the scholar Frederic Harrison in the magazine "19th Century" titled "Restore the Elgin Marbles."
He also engaged in journalism and criticism, referring to significant issues and equally important figures of his time, highlighting the work of other intellectual creators, while his pen in his prose poems and narratives is extremely impactful.
These are the "diamonds" of the Alexandrian poet, which ultimately prove to be both numerous and shining with light. Perhaps some of them are still hidden. Perhaps researchers will reveal more over time, granting the poet K.P. Cavafy the title of a great prose writer as well.
