  • Hegel was the last thinker and philosopher of the modern era who opened a new path (school) of thought, developing a philosophy based on freedom within a broader philosophical system. He dealt with many topics to which he gave new dimensions (from property to ethics and the state). Idealist and inspired by Christianity, he engaged with logic, nature, humanity, and the Divine through a dialectical scheme, based on which he moved from thesis to antithesis to return to his original thesis, which he had enriched and elevated.

Clearly influenced by the ancient Greek dialectic of Heraclitus, Zeno of Elea, and of course Plato, among others, modern dialectics has been directly linked to Hegelian methodology. Hegel was arguably the most systematic of the post-Kantian idealists, and it is even considered that the so-called German idealism essentially ended with his death. The influence he exerted and the reactions he provoked were enormous, from Karl Marx to Charles Taylor, among others.

In "Hegel: Prefaces and Introductions," the texts (prefaces and introductions to his works) are gathered in which Hegel embodies the essence of what he analyzes as well as the way (methodology) he approaches them.

Description & Specifications

This edition includes all the Prefaces and Introductions that Hegel presented in the editions of his works, from 1807 to 1832. Known mainly for the emblematic aphoristic phrases they contain, the Prefaces are primarily indispensable documents of the way in which the philosopher has conceived the fundamental mission of each of his works.

As for the Introductions, they are integral parts of the works to which they are prefixed: the endeavor of the Phenomenology is hardly understood without its majestic Introduction; the particularity of Hegelian Logic is clarified nowhere else as clearly as in the Introduction to the Science of Logic; the need to structure philosophy as a universal science within the framework of a system finds a clear formulation in the Introduction to the Encyclopedia; lastly, the Philosophy of Right presupposes the interconnection of the concepts of will, freedom, and law that is presented in the Introduction to the work.

This edition presents these texts in a new, valid translation, aspiring to serve as a foundational work for the reception of Hegelian philosophy in Greece, as well as a kind of "natural" introduction to the Hegelian philosophical universe. The extensive interpretive Commentary guides the reader in a close reading of the texts, aiming to interpret their main points, highlight their line of reasoning, and clarify the meaning of obscure passages.
