Description & Specifications

It took Platero, the most famous and universal little donkey of the Spanish-speaking world, over a century to arrive complete in the Greek language. In this special book, "joy and sorrow are twin sisters," as Juan Ramón Jiménez writes. The Nobel laureate, through this colorful elegy, captures the lyrical autobiography of his youth, immortalizes his birthplace, Moguer, and creates an eternal myth, the myth of the four-legged, silver-gray Platero, the myth of a beloved and faithful companion.

Each of the one hundred thirty-eight short chapters of the work, which is the most representative example of prose poetry in the long Spanish tradition, composes a vivid painting, always set against the backdrop of the Andalusian landscape, which comes alive before our eyes, with themes such as the friendship between the poet and Platero, life in the countryside, the changing of the seasons, the harshness of children, the beauty of nature, fear, and death.

An emblematic text of world literature, with the most reprints, translations, and illustrations after Cervantes' Don Quixote. "Platero and I is undoubtedly an idiosyncratic milestone in the work of Juan Ramón Jiménez [...]. The author sketches and then indelibly engraves many of the memories of his childhood in Moguer, immerses himself in poetic prose liberated from the corsets of meter, focuses on the life and deeds of a donkey, on the place and its locals, but, above all, gifts us the incomparable pleasure of the inexhaustible wealth of language, with the brilliance of adjectives and lexical shades, with the unique touches of each place and its dialects, alive, warm, and pulsating [...]." Eduardo Luthena, From the introduction of the edition
