Description

Description

How did the participants in the 1821 Revolution navigate afterwards? How did the Greek state address the men and women who contributed to the national rebirth?

What rewards were reserved for all types of contributors, namely the warriors, politicians, "internal creditors," and those affected by war, both indigenous and foreign?

The book at hand focuses on the "workshop" of political rewards, the first post-revolutionary period from 1828 to 1844, presenting in detail the main means of material and moral recognition the Greek state offered to the fighters.

At the same time, it explains how those policies became a prerequisite for state rewards in later national wars up until the 20th century. The game of rewards had two sides: the demands of the contributors and the ideology of state policies.

Foreign factors, personal affinities and aversions, selfish interests, social differences, and national aspirations intervened among them. The intricate history of rewards emerges from a multitude of sources, presented in a way that highlights the interactions between fighters and governments, private and public discourse, glory and distress, recognition and disillusionments that always characterize the transition from the peak of national struggles to the compromises and pragmatism of the following day.

The series WORLD AND MODERN HISTORY includes works by Greek and foreign authors on Greek, European, and world history with penetrating and unorthodox perspectives. Today's quests are linked to the events, ideas, and dynamics of the past.

The series highlights History as a living part of the identities and decisions that accompany our steps in the present and future.
