Description

Description

The core of this book is the collection of Chios jars and jar lids by Angelos Vlastaris. However, the book also includes significant ceramics from other collections, as well as rich archival material.

These ceramics are more recent but tread lightly on the medieval past. Their rough construction, shapes, and decorations correspond to Byzantine jars and indicate an unbroken pottery tradition. Their technological and morphological characteristics testify to a standardized technological chain and a specific method of learning the craft.

What is particularly striking, however, is the multitude of inscriptions, dates, Christian symbols, and decorative motifs on them. These ceramics exude the overall extroversion, cultural, and religious freedom of that period.

They vividly capture their era, and as they are inextricably linked to it, they fade away with its end in 1822. The proceeds from the book sales will be donated to a charitable foundation for the study and promotion of modern Greek ceramics.
