The Acharnians is the oldest of the surviving works of Aristophanes. Six years after the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, the entire rural population moved within the walls of Athens. The countryside became deserted. The farmer Dikaeopolis, frustrated and disappointed by politicians who do not care about the hardships of war, decides to negotiate a private peace treaty with the Spartans. With a peace of his own, he secures a truce. The disturbances, the war chariots, the battles are finally over.
The Acharnians, coalmen, are enraged, consider him a traitor, and want to punish him. Dikaeopolis seeks the help of Euripides, persuades them by setting up "other tricks," and arrogantly confronts the war-loving general Lamachos, humiliating him. He triumphs and celebrates.
