Description

Description

This edition presents the embedded glazed vessels (the bacini) found on the facades of numerous churches in the regional unit of Chania. It is the first volume of a broader project aimed at presenting related data from other areas of Crete.

The vessels were identified as part of the research program: "Embedded vessels in Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches of the Greek world: an electronic corpus." The study of the ceramics reveals unexplored aspects of the material culture of Crete during the Venetian and Ottoman periods, providing further insights into the history of the broader region and its connections to other sites from the 13th to the 20th century.

At the same time, it explores aspects of the practice of embedding in contemporary times. Through this research, the ceramics are linked to the respective monument, the space, and the people of Western Crete, as, in addition to the detailed archaeological documentation, aspects of the diffusion of ceramics and the practice of embedding are discussed.

The text is accompanied by a detailed catalog, map, sketches, plans, and numerous photographs. Although the practice can also be found in other areas of the Mediterranean, through the systematic study and overall presentation of the material from the Chania region, its particular dissemination in Crete is highlighted.
