  • Coral skeletal material requires bicarbonates and carbonates in addition to calcium.
  • The total concentration of bicarbonates and carbonates is referred to as carbonate alkalinity or carbonate hardness.
  • Natural Seawater has an alkalinity of about 2.7 meq/L or approximately 7.5 dKH.
  • For a stable system, the alkalinity should be similar to that of Natural Seawater or slightly higher and preferably should not fluctuate more than 5%.
  • Check the alkalinity levels of your aquarium using this test, ensuring that conditions are right for healthy corals and fish.
  • The test is sensitive enough to detect small changes in alkalinity levels.
