Amazing book, it should be taught in schools. It teaches you a lot of things about those times and the Asia Minor catastrophe. It tells you both sides, you hear the whole truth. Once you start it, you can't put it down, incredibly moving. Dido Sotiriou has another book that I want to read, "The Dead Are Waiting."
Τρομερό βιβλίο, θα έπρεπε να διδασκόταν στα σχολεία. Σου μαθαίνει ένα σωρό πράγματα για τους καιρούς εκείνους και την μικρασιατική καταστροφή. Σου λέει και τις δύο πλευρές ακούς όλη την αλήθεια. Με το που το αρχίσεις δεν ξεκολλάς, τρομερά συγκινητικό. Έχει κιάλλο βιβλίο η Διδώ σωτηρίου που θέλω να διαβάσω " οι νεκροί περιμένουν"
It is truly a "seismic shock"... I have read the 1962 version, I don't know if it matters. It is incredibly descriptive, it creates complete video images in your head and full of feelings of horror for the evil of war. Even if you don't know much about history, you can still follow the historical parts of the book. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT!
Ειναι πραγματικά "σεισμική δόνηση"... Εγώ έχω διαβάσει την έκδοση του 1962 δεν ξέρω αν παίζει ρόλο. Είναι απίστευτα περιγραφικό, σου δημιουργεί ολόκληρομενες βίντεοεικόνες στο κεφάλι και γεμάτα συναισθήματα φρίκης για το κακό του πολεμου. Ακόμα και αν δεν ξέρεις καλή ιστορία μια χαρά μπορείς να παρακολουθήσεις τα ιστορικά μέρη του βιβλίου. ΔΙΑ ΒΑ ΣΤΕ ΤΟ!
A book that I have read at least 3 times and will read again!
Along with "The Dead are Waiting" by the same author, I think that all Greeks should read it to learn about the history of the Asia Minor catastrophe firsthand.
Coming from grandparents who were from Asia Minor, I felt like I was experiencing what they went through.
The writing of Dido Sotiropoulos is wonderful!!
Ένα βιβλίο που έχω διαβάσει τουλάχιστον 3 φορές κ θα ξαναδιαβάσω!
Μαζί με το "Οι νεκροί περιμένουν" τής ίδιας νομίζω πώς οφείλουν να διαβάσουν όλοι οι Έλληνες για να μάθουν την ιστορία τής μικρασιατικής καταστροφής από πρώτο χέρι.
Καταγόμενη από μικρασιάτες παππούδες ένιωσα να βιώνω αυτά πού πέρασαν.
Η γραφή της Διδούς Σωτηρίου υπέροχη!!

Για μενα που καταγομαι απο κει και λιγο πολυ τα χω ακουσει απο γιαγιαδες και παππουδες απλα συγκινηση.
For anyone who wants to learn history and what the Asia Minor Catastrophe is, it is one of the best books of its kind and I recommend it without hesitation to all ages! Additionally, the reader will be informed about the entire historical and political background (World War I, Balkan Wars) that led to the uprooting of the Pontic Greeks in 1922, through the experiential, personal story of the main protagonist. And one last thing: those who read it will realize the perennially insidious role played by the Great Powers (Germany, England, France, Italy) turning against Greece, and the extent to which the West essentially contributed to many of the dark pages of Greek history. So that the old do not forget, and the young can learn...
*The only negative: the numerous Turkish words used extensively in the Pontic dialect, for which you will need a dictionary. But without hindering the understanding of the text.
Για όποιον θέλει να μάθει ιστορία και το τι εστί Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή, είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα βιβλία του είδους και το συνιστώ ασυζητητι σε όλες τις ηλικίες!
Επίσης,ο αναγνώστης θα ενημερωθεί και για όλο το ιστορικό και πολιτικό παρασκήνιο ( Α' Παγκόσμιος, Βαλκανικοί Πόλεμοι) το οποίο οδήγησε στον ξεριζωμό του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού το 1922, μέσα από την βιωματική, προσωπική ιστορία του κεντρικού πρωταγωνιστή.
Και κάτι τελευταίο: όσοι το διαβάσετε θα συνειδητοποιήσετε τον διαχρονικά ύπουλο ρόλο που έχουν διαδραματίσει οι Μεγάλες Δυνάμεις (Γερμανία,Αγγλία, Γαλλία, Ιταλία) στρεφόμενες κατά της Ελλάδας,και στο ποσό η Δύση συνετέλεσε ουσιαστικά σε πολλές από τις μαύρες σελίδες της Ελληνικής Ιστορίας.
Για να μην ξεχνούν οι παλιοί,και να μαθαίνουν οι νεότεροι...
*Το μόνο αρνητικό: οι αρκετές τουρκικές σε ρίζα λέξεις που χρησιμοποιούνταν ευρέως στην Ποντιακή διάλεκτο, για τις οποίες θα χρειαστείτε κάποιο λεξικό. Αλλα χωρίς να παρεμποδίζεται η κατανόηση του κειμένου.
