Description & Specifications

Skepticism is one of the three major schools of ancient Greek philosophy – the others being Stoicism and Epicureanism – which, in addition to a way of thinking, also proposes a way of life.

How to Keep an Open Mind serves as an excellent introduction to its principles, through a modern translation and approach to fundamental passages from the texts of Sextus, the only Skeptic philosopher whose works have survived.

Sextus advocated – and suggests specific techniques to achieve this – avoiding any judgment about the true nature of things, believing that this is the way to confront the dogmatism of others, and also to maintain our spiritual and mental peace.

As Richard Bett notes in his introduction, the most important lesson we can draw today from Sextus's skepticism is the ability to listen to opposing views on any issue.

Thus, we will gain an open mind and the capacity for dialogue, avoiding intolerance and fanaticism, which are hallmarks of our time.
