Negatives
1) You need to have an Apple Music subscription for it to take commands
2) Even if you have a subscription (which I do), it doesn't take commands for Greek songs and rarely for a specific track, meaning you have to say play this or that singer or request a foreign song... nothing like Spotify (which I also have a subscription for), which is by far better.
3) If you don't have internet (we had an outage in the neighborhood) it doesn't work, meaning you can't just throw a song via Bluetooth like you would with a simple €5 speaker. What irony that a €150 speaker can't do it but a €5 speaker can.
4) We will have to buy a second speaker from another brand, since quite often we might not have internet. *And with a weak signal it underperforms.

4) αναγκαστικά θα πάρουμε δεύτερη ηχείο άλλης μάρκας, μιας και αρκετές φορές μπορεί να μην έχουμε και ίντερνετ. *Και με ασθενές σήμα υπολειτουργεί.

I've had it for 2 years. The sound quality is EXCELLENT!!! And the build is of high quality. In my opinion, it's very worth it! Especially if you have an iPhone and a subscription to Apple Home, it's very good. Also, you can tell Siri to play songs from Spotify, and it will play without needing the iPhone, only it will be with AirPlay, but that's good too! I would say that until 2025 it's worth it, or at least I wouldn't find a reason to replace it with another. The best thing is to get two and use them as speakers for music from TV, mobile, etc. Anyway, it's worth it!!!

Επισης μπορείς και να πεις στην Siri να βάλει τραγούδια από το Spotify και θα βάλει χωρίς να χρειαστεί το iPhone μόνο που θα είναι με airplay αλά είναι και αυτό καλό ! Θα έλεγα ότι μέχρι και το 2025 αξίζει ή τουλάχιστον εγώ δεν θα έβρισκα λόγο για να το αντικαταστήσω με άλλο. I've had it for 2 years now. Nice speaker and connects well with devices of the same brand. On the downside, the fact that it wasn't supposed to be released in Greece (according to support) has caused me to have issues twice, and it doesn't connect to Apple's server. The problem comes and goes intermittently, but if you want it as a main hub in a smart home, it creates issues

Excellent sound - impressive for its size. I got it for HomeKit and Matter for home automation.
Everything works correctly. I removed one star because if you activate Siri on this, Siri on the phone becomes less functional. If I tell my phone to call someone, it does so necessarily through the HomePod. This means that everyone in the house hears it, and if I want to change rooms, I can't...
And if I disable personal requests on the HomePod, instead of answering the phone, the HomePod answers again and now says it can't make calls without the personal requests option enabled.
I pseudo-solved it by setting the phone to listen for the command 'Siri' and the HomePod only to "Hey Siri." So if I want to address the phone only, I can.
If you have a third Siri device (iPad/MacBook), it essentially creates the same confusion.

Όλα λειτουργούν σωστά. Η αφαίρεση του ενός αστεριού, διότι εάν ενεργοποιήσεις την siri και σε αυτό, η siri στο τηλέφωνο γίνεται λιγότερο λειτουργική. Το ψευτο-έλυσα, βάζοντας το τηλέφωνο να ακούει στην εντολή 'Siri' και το homepod μόνο στο "Hey Siri". Οπότε εάν θέλω να απευθυνθώ στο τηλέφωνο μόνο μπορώ.
Εάν έχετε και τρίτη συσκευή siri (ipad / macbook) ουσιαστικά γίνεται το ίδιο μπέρδεμα.

Connected very easily with homekit. Very easy to set up. The sound is better than I expected. It was purchased mainly to function as a hub for my other smart devices. Very convenient to speak and open lights, heating.

Και το τέλος, έχω και Apple TV Box, το έχω συνδέσει να βγαίνει ο ήχος από τα HomePod, και η θέαση πάει σε μίνι κινηματογράφο στο σπίτι σου. Με ταινίες από Netflix & Apple TV, ο ήχος είναι απίστευτος άμα μιλάει στην ταινία ένας από τα δεξιά, βγαίνει ο ήχος από τα δεξιά, κλπ και κλπ...

**I know that I've made it a bit of a nerd blog post, but I'm having fun. Next test: To give direct IPv6 addresses from DHCP.**
I bought two to pair with my Apple TV. While it seems to work very well now, I lost hours on the setup. There are several issues, which for many may not be significant but made me regret my choice:
1. The first time you activate them (you plug them in and bring your iPhone/iPad close), you are forced to connect them to the same Wi-Fi as those devices. They automatically take whatever IP they want and there is no room for customization.
2. You are required to enable Apple Home and by default, they suggest listening continuously so you can ask Siri for things. Goodbye privacy.
3. I thought I would block the ones I didn't like from the firewall and continued. But be careful, if you don't know networking, it's like having a wiretap in your home by default.
4. When I connected the second one, it asked if I wanted to make them a stereo set. I said yes and they got stuck in a configuration loop.
5. Eventually, searching online I factory reset them and connected them to my laptop (they have a USB-C cable). I did a firmware update which was 3.5GB and took a long time to install. Luckily I had a Mac, because I had no future with Linux.
From that point on, the Apple TV recognized them and I had the experience you expect from an Apple product (I write this in a good way). They don't have Spotify Connect, but the Apple TV does, so personally, I don't care. They also play very nicely in stereo mode.
In general, I can say that I was very disappointed by the above and it required some network configuration on the part of my other systems:
- I set up DHCP reservations for their MAC addresses (edit: useless, see below)
- I connected the iPhone and Apple TV to the same network until I configured mDNS forwarders (which if anyone has done, is not fun)
- Various additional routing and firewall things to integrate them the way I want in my network but also to have privacy.
However, the sound quality is very good. Wonderful, I can say. I give it 3 stars to be fair, since many are not concerned about the above. I replaced wired speakers that were quite a bit more expensive and the sound might even be better.
I don't think I would have bought them if I knew all this.

Did you see what I wrote above about MAC address reservations? Apple, because apparently it's a device that you move back and forth across multiple networks, randomizes the MAC address to annoy you a little more. One way to give it the IP you want is to set up RADIUS or generally some auth thing. Another way to go a bit more high level is to assign the IP to what your router thinks is the device (I think this is done based on the hostname but I was already bored and didn't look it up), without MAC address binding. FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE.

Thank you for the downvotes, but if you buy everything Apple puts out without question, they will never improve their products. It is unacceptable in 2023 not to be able to set basic network parameters (and privacy parameters) on a device in your home.
Another edit after a couple of years:
The Apple TV seems to function as a Thread Border Router and likely uses NAT64 or some other proxying mechanism to keep the HomePods visible on the LAN via IPv4.
I had left them on their own VLAN and didn't bother further, I did mDNS forwarding. I remembered it again and took a look.
- I assume that Apple has implemented a dual-stack bridging system between Thread and Wi-Fi through the Apple TV (what I mentioned at the beginning)
- When the HomePods connect via Thread instead of Wi-Fi, they stop getting IPs from the router's DHCP and rely on IPv6 routing.
- The hostnames I had set revert to “Apple HomePod” randomly, which is likely related to iCloud device sync and not exclusively to the Thread network.
- The IPs change and there is no way to tie them to a fixed hostname because Apple randomizes the MAC addresses...
After resetting the Apple TV, the hostnames and IPs temporarily return to their normal configuration, and the router can recognize them correctly. However, once the HomePods reconnect to the Thread network, the problems return.
Additionally, the HomePods do not always switch immediately from Wi-Fi to Thread – the transition seems to happen randomly or under specific conditions, and after restarting the Apple TV, they may temporarily remain on Wi-Fi.
In short: If you have HomePods and Apple TV, you have no control over their IPs, hostnames, or MAC addresses. This means that any attempt to integrate them into a carefully configured network is from very difficult (e.g., network auth) to futile.

1. Την πρώτη φορά που τα ενεργοποιείς (τα βάζεις στο ρεύμα και πλησιάζεις το iphone / ipad κοντά είσαι υποχρεωμένος να τα συνδέσεις στο ίδιο wifi με τις εν λόγω συσκευές. Παίρνουν αυτόματα όποια ip θέλουν και δεν υπάρχει κανένα περιθώριο για customization.
2. Είσαι υποχρεωμένος να ενεργοποιήσεις το apple home και ως προεπιλογή προτείνουν να ακούν συνέχεια για να μπορείς να ζητάς από το siri πράγματα. Goodbye privacy.
3. Σκέφτηκα ότι θα τα μπλοκάρω από firewall αυτά που δεν μου αρέσουν και συνέχισα. Προσοχή όμως, αν δεν γνωρίζετε δικτυακά, είναι σα να έχεις wiretap σπίτι σου by default.
4. Όταν συνέδεσα το δεύτερο, μου είπε αν θέλω να τα κάνω στέρεο set. Είπα ναι και κόλλησαν σε ένα configuration loop.
5. Τελικά, ψάχνοντας online τα έκανα factory reset και τα συνέδεσα με το laptop μου (έχουν usb c καλώδιο). Έκανα firmware update το οποίο ήταν 3.5gb και έκανε ώρα να εγκατασταθεί. Ευτυχώς που είχα μακ, γιατί με linux δεν είχα μέλλον.
Από εκείνο το σημείο και μετά, τα είδε το apple tv και είχα το experience που περιμένεις από ένα apple προϊόν (με την καλή έννοια το γράφω). Δεν έχουν spotify connect, αλλά έχει το apple tv οπότε προσωπικά δεν με ενδιαφέρει. Παίζουν πολύ ωραία σε stereo mode επίσης.
Γενικά μπορώ να πω ότι απογοητεύτηκα πολύ από τα παραπάνω και χρειάστηκε κάποιο network configuration από πλευράς των άλλων συστημάτων μου:
- έβαλα dhcp reservations για τα mac addresses τους (edit: άχρηστο, δες παρακάτω)
- συνέδεσα στο ίδιο network το iphone και το apple tv, μέχρι να κάνω configure mDNS forwarders (που αν το έχει κάνει κανείς, δεν είναι διασκεδαστικό)
- διάφορα επιπλέον routing και firewall πράγματα για να ενταχθούν με τον τρόπο που θέλω στο δίκτυό μου αλλά και να έχω privacy.
Όμως, η ποιότητα του ήχου είναι πολύ καλή. Θαυμάσια μπορώ να πω. Βάζω 3 αστέρια για να είμαι δίκαιος, αφού πολλούς δεν τους απασχολούν τα παραπάνω. Αντικατέστησα wired ηχεία αρκετά πιο ακριβά και ο ήχος ίσως να είναι και καλύτερος.
Δεν πιστεύω ότι θα τα αγόραζα αν τα ήξερα όλα αυτά.

Είδατε τι γράφω παραπάνω για mac address reservations? Η Apple, επειδή apparently είναι μια συσκευή που την πηγαίνεις πέρα δώθε σε πολλαπλά δίκτυα, κάνει randomize το mac address για να σου ζαλίζει το συκώτι λίγο παραπάνω. Ένας τρόπος να του δώσεις την ip που θέλεις είναι να σηκώσεις radius ή γενικά κάποιο auth πράγμα. Ένας άλλος να πας λίγο πιο high level είναι να κάνεις assign την ip σε αυτό που πιστεύει το router σου ότι είναι το device (με βάση το hostname νομίζω γίνεται αυτό αλλά είχα ήδη βαρεθεί και δεν το έψαξα), χωρίς mac address binding. ΕΛΕΟΣ.

Το Apple TV φαίνεται να λειτουργεί ως Thread Border Router και πιθανώς χρησιμοποιεί NAT64 ή κάποιο άλλο μηχανισμό proxying για να διατηρεί τα HomePods ορατά στο LAN μέσω IPv4.
Τα είχα αφήσει σε ένα δικό τους VLAN και δεν ασχολούμουν περαιτέρω, έκανα mDNS forwarding. Το θυμήθηκα πάλι και έριξα μια ματιά.
- Υποθέτω ότι η Apple έχει εφαρμόσει ένα dual-stack bridging σύστημα μεταξύ Thread και Wi-Fi μέσω του Apple TV (αυτό που αναφέρω στην αρχή)
- Όταν τα HomePods συνδέονται μέσω Thread αντί Wi-Fi, σταματούν να παίρνουν IP από το DHCP του router και βασίζονται σε IPv6 routing.
- Τα hostnames που είχα ορίσει επαναφέρονται σε “Apple HomePod” τυχαία, κάτι που πιθανότατα συνδέεται με iCloud device sync και όχι αποκλειστικά με το Thread network.
- Οι IPs αλλάζουν και δεν υπάρχει τρόπος να τα δέσω σε σταθερό hostname, γιατί η Apple κάνει randomize τα MAC addresses...
Μετά από reset του Apple TV, τα hostnames και οι IPs επιστρέφουν προσωρινά στο κανονικό τους configuration, και το router μπορεί να τα αναγνωρίσει σωστά. Όμως, μόλις τα HomePods συνδεθούν ξανά στο Thread network, τα προβλήματα επανέρχονται.
Επιπλέον, τα HomePods δεν αλλάζουν πάντα άμεσα από Wi-Fi σε Thread – η μετάβαση φαίνεται να γίνεται τυχαία ή υπό συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες, και μετά από επανεκκίνηση του Apple TV μπορεί να παραμείνουν προσωρινά στο Wi-Fi.
Εν ολίγοις: Αν έχεις HomePods και Apple TV, δεν έχεις έλεγχο πάνω στις IPs, τα hostnames ή τις MAC addresses τους. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι οποιαδήποτε προσπάθεια να τα εντάξεις σε προσεκτικά ρυθμισμένο δίκτυο είναι από πολύ δύσκολη (πχ network auth) έως μάταιη.

από εκεί και πέρα μέσω Homekit και Airplay λειτουργεί άψογα μόνο με συσκευές Apple είτε να ελέγχεις διάφορες έξυπνες συσκευές είτε μουσική,Podcast. παίζει μια χαρά και χωρίς συνδρομή Apple Music Internet ραδιόφωνο η μουσική αν έχετε στο iPhone. όποιος έχει Spotify παίζει αρκεί να κάνει την σύνδεση με το ηχείο μέσω Airplay και όχι να το ζητήσει από την Siri γιατί δυστυχώς δεν το υποστηρίζει αλλά μικρό το κακό. τώρα όσο αφορά τον ήχο πραγματικά οποίος λέει ναι μεν αλλά δεν είναι δυνατό κτλπ δεν ισχύει! καταρχήν έχουμε ένα ηχείο που είναι σε μέγεθος πορτοκαλί και πραγματικά παράγει πολύ καλό και καθαρό ήχο και φυσικά μπάσο που σε καμία περίπτωση δεν λες ότι βγαίνει από τέτοιο μέγεθος. αν θες πάρτι σε τεράστιο σπίτι με 15-20 άτομα να φωνάζουν κτλπ ναι δεν κάνει όμως για σαλόνι η μεγάλο δωμάτιο να ακούς μουσικουλα ακόμα και σε ένταση 70-80% είναι μια χαρά χωρίς παραμόρφωση και ακούγεται αρκετά δυνατά. άλλο ένα θέμα που θέλω να πω μην το βάλετε σε διάφορες βάσης που υπάρχουν στο εμπόριο γιατί χαλάει τον ήχο. το καλύτερο που το προτείνει και η Apple είναι ξύλινη επιφάνεια σε απόσταση 20-25 εκατοστά από τοίχο γιατί έχει σχεδιαστεί με το μεγάφωνο προς τα κάτω ανάποδα για σωστή αντανάκλαση. και να κλείσω να πω ότι η τιμή του που είναι στα 90€ σε μεγάλη αλυσίδα είναι πολύ καλή όταν ένα καλούτσικο σκέτο Bluetooth ηχείο έχει 100-150€.

Quite a good speaker both in terms of sound quality and size, and in terms of connectivity. I didn't find it quite responsive in commands, though, but that was purely a Wi-Fi issue since it connects through that and not Bluetooth. It has several functions besides the sound it offers, but only for Apple users, as I believe all Apple products are for such users due to the software. I don't know if any Android device could find it and play music through a familiar network because we don't have anything Android at home. However, I will check and get back to you.

The only reason I don't give it a 5/5 but something that someone who will buy it should pay attention to, is that it cannot connect via classic Bluetooth but only through airplay, which is the standard way of connectivity in the Apple ecosystem, in other words using WiFi. This results in improper playback when the connection is slow. I don't even know if it works with any other device besides Apple that doesn't have airplay and that is bad in itself. Also, because I have it in the office, every time I approach it, it shows a connection indication, which is good only when you actually want to play something, not when it constantly shows it. Otherwise, it's a very cool speaker.
Ο μόνος λόγος που δεν βάζω 5/5 αλλά και κάτι που θα πρέπει να προσέξει κάποιος που θα το αγοράσει, είναι ότι δεν μπορεί να συνδεθεί με το κλασικό Bluetooth αλλά μόνο μέσω airplay που είναι ο στάνταρ τρόπος συνδεσιμότητας στο οικοσυστημα της Apple, δηλαδή με άλλα λόγια χρησιμοποιώντας WiFi. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα όταν είναι αργή η σύνδεση να μη γίνεται σωστά η αναπαραγή. Δεν γνωρίζω καν αν λειτουργεί με άλλη συσκευή πέρα από Apple η οποία δεν θα διαθέτει airplay και αυτό είναι κακό από μόνο του. Επίσης, επειδή το έχω στο γραφείο κάθε φορά που το πλησιάζω βγάζει ένδειξη για σύνδεση, το οποίο είναι καλό μόνο όταν θέλεις όντως να παίξεις κάτι, όχι όταν στο βγάζει συνέχεια. Quality. Powerful for its size. Worth it in combination with an Apple Music subscription where everything is available in lossless audio. Homepod mini and Apple Music lossless audio have very good quality. It combines very nicely with Apple TV.
update 14/04/23: Buying a second one is worth it. They connected with each other. They play anything together. Sound upgrade. Louder and higher quality sound. They play very nicely from Apple Music and Apple TV+. They cooperate very nicely with Apple TV and iPad devices, generally with the Apple ecosystem.

update 14/04/23: Αγορά 2ου αξίζει. Έκαναν σύνδεση μεταξύ τους. Παίζουν μαζί οτιδήποτε. Αναβάθμιση του ήχου. Πιο δυνατός ήχος και ποιοτικός. Παίζουν πολύ ωραία από apple music και apple tv+. Συνεργάζονται πολύ ωραία με τις συσκευες apple tv και ipad, γενικά με το οικοσύστημα της apple.
After about 4 years with the HomePod mini, I can't say that I regret buying them (I have 5).
The positives are:
The quality of the build but especially the sound.
Siri for the smart devices in the house.
Sensor for room temperature/humidity.
You can listen to the same music in every room.
You can listen to music in combination with another AirPlay speaker like Sonos.
The negatives:
They are not many watts and do not have strong bass.

Στα αρνητικά:
Δεν είναι πολλά watt και δεν έχουν δυνατό μπάσο.

Η τιμή θα έπρεπε να είναι 80-100 ευρώ.
Negatives
1) You need to have an Apple Music subscription for it to take commands
2) Even if you have a subscription (which I do), it doesn't take commands for Greek songs and rarely for a specific track, meaning you have to say play this or that singer or request a foreign song... nothing like Spotify (which I also have a subscription for), which is by far better.
3) If you don't have internet (we had an outage in the neighborhood) it doesn't work, meaning you can't just throw a song via Bluetooth like you would with a simple €5 speaker. What irony that a €150 speaker can't do it but a €5 speaker can.
4) We will have to buy a second speaker from another brand, since quite often we might not have internet. *And with a weak signal it underperforms.

3) αν δεν έχεις ίντερνετ (πάθαμε μια βλάβη στην γειτονιά) δε λειτουργεί δλδ δε μπορεί απλά με Bluetooth να πετάξεις ένα τραγούδι όπως θα έκανε ένα απλό ηχείο των 5€. Τι ειρωνία να μη το κάνει ένα ηχείο των 150€ και να το κάνει ένα ηχείο των 5€
4) αναγκαστικά θα πάρουμε δεύτερη ηχείο άλλης μάρκας, μιας και αρκετές φορές μπορεί να μην έχουμε και ίντερνετ. *Και με ασθενές σήμα υπολειτουργεί.

Negatives
1) You need to have an Apple Music subscription for it to take commands
2) Even if you have a subscription (which I do), it doesn't take commands for Greek songs and rarely for a specific track, meaning you have to say play this or that singer or request a foreign song... nothing like Spotify (which I also have a subscription for), which is by far better.
3) If you don't have internet (we had an outage in the neighborhood) it doesn't work, meaning you can't just throw a song via Bluetooth like you would with a simple €5 speaker. What irony that a €150 speaker can't do it but a €5 speaker can.
4) We will have to buy a second speaker from another brand, since quite often we might not have internet. *And with a weak signal it underperforms.

4) αναγκαστικά θα πάρουμε δεύτερη ηχείο άλλης μάρκας, μιας και αρκετές φορές μπορεί να μην έχουμε και ίντερνετ. *Και με ασθενές σήμα υπολειτουργεί.

I've had it for 2 years. The sound quality is EXCELLENT!!! And the build is of high quality. In my opinion, it's very worth it! Especially if you have an iPhone and a subscription to Apple Home, it's very good. Also, you can tell Siri to play songs from Spotify, and it will play without needing the iPhone, only it will be with AirPlay, but that's good too! I would say that until 2025 it's worth it, or at least I wouldn't find a reason to replace it with another. The best thing is to get two and use them as speakers for music from TV, mobile, etc. Anyway, it's worth it!!!

I've had it for 2 years now. Nice speaker and connects well with devices of the same brand. On the downside, the fact that it wasn't supposed to be released in Greece (according to support) has caused me to have issues twice, and it doesn't connect to Apple's server. Excellent sound - impressive for its size. I got it for HomeKit and Matter for home automation.
Everything works correctly. I removed one star because if you activate Siri on this, Siri on the phone becomes less functional. If I tell my phone to call someone, it does so necessarily through the HomePod. This means that everyone in the house hears it, and if I want to change rooms, I can't...

Και το τέλος, έχω και Apple TV Box, το έχω συνδέσει να βγαίνει ο ήχος από τα HomePod, και η θέαση πάει σε μίνι κινηματογράφο στο σπίτι σου. **I know that I've made it a bit of a nerd blog post, but I'm having fun. Next test: To give direct IPv6 addresses from DHCP.**
I bought two to pair with my Apple TV. While it seems to work very well now, I lost hours on the setup. There are several issues, which for many may not be significant but made me regret my choice:
1. The first time you activate them (you plug them in and bring your iPhone/iPad close), you are forced to connect them to the same Wi-Fi as those devices. They automatically take whatever IP they want and there is no room for customization.
2. You are required to enable Apple Home and by default, they suggest listening continuously so you can ask Siri for things. Goodbye privacy.
3. I thought I would block the ones I didn't like from the firewall and continued. But be careful, if you don't know networking, it's like having a wiretap in your home by default.
4. When I connected the second one, it asked if I wanted to make them a stereo set. I said yes and they got stuck in a configuration loop.
5. Eventually, searching online I factory reset them and connected them to my laptop (they have a USB-C cable). I did a firmware update which was 3.5GB and took a long time to install. Luckily I had a Mac, because I had no future with Linux.
From that point on, the Apple TV recognized them and I had the experience you expect from an Apple product (I write this in a good way). They don't have Spotify Connect, but the Apple TV does, so personally, I don't care. They also play very nicely in stereo mode.
In general, I can say that I was very disappointed by the above and it required some network configuration on the part of my other systems:
- I set up DHCP reservations for their MAC addresses (edit: useless, see below)
- I connected the iPhone and Apple TV to the same network until I configured mDNS forwarders (which if anyone has done, is not fun)
- Various additional routing and firewall things to integrate them the way I want in my network but also to have privacy.
However, the sound quality is very good. Wonderful, I can say. I give it 3 stars to be fair, since many are not concerned about the above. I replaced wired speakers that were quite a bit more expensive and the sound might even be better.
I don't think I would have bought them if I knew all this.

Did you see what I wrote above about MAC address reservations? Apple, because apparently it's a device that you move back and forth across multiple networks, randomizes the MAC address to annoy you a little more. One way to give it the IP you want is to set up RADIUS or generally some auth thing. Another way to go a bit more high level is to assign the IP to what your router thinks is the device (I think this is done based on the hostname but I was already bored and didn't look it up), without MAC address binding. FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE.

Thank you for the downvotes, but if you buy everything Apple puts out without question, they will never improve their products. It is unacceptable in 2023 not to be able to set basic network parameters (and privacy parameters) on a device in your home.
Another edit after a couple of years:
The Apple TV seems to function as a Thread Border Router and likely uses NAT64 or some other proxying mechanism to keep the HomePods visible on the LAN via IPv4.
I had left them on their own VLAN and didn't bother further, I did mDNS forwarding. I remembered it again and took a look.
- I assume that Apple has implemented a dual-stack bridging system between Thread and Wi-Fi through the Apple TV (what I mentioned at the beginning)
- When the HomePods connect via Thread instead of Wi-Fi, they stop getting IPs from the router's DHCP and rely on IPv6 routing.
- The hostnames I had set revert to “Apple HomePod” randomly, which is likely related to iCloud device sync and not exclusively to the Thread network.
- The IPs change and there is no way to tie them to a fixed hostname because Apple randomizes the MAC addresses...
After resetting the Apple TV, the hostnames and IPs temporarily return to their normal configuration, and the router can recognize them correctly. However, once the HomePods reconnect to the Thread network, the problems return.
Additionally, the HomePods do not always switch immediately from Wi-Fi to Thread – the transition seems to happen randomly or under specific conditions, and after restarting the Apple TV, they may temporarily remain on Wi-Fi.
In short: If you have HomePods and Apple TV, you have no control over their IPs, hostnames, or MAC addresses. This means that any attempt to integrate them into a carefully configured network is from very difficult (e.g., network auth) to futile.

Αγόρασα δύο για να τα συνδυάσω με apple tv. Ενώ φαίνεται να λειτουργεί πολύ καλά τώρα, έχασα ώρες στο setup. Υπάρχουν αρκετά θέματα, τα οποία για πολλούς μπορεί να μην είναι σημαντικά αλλά εμένα με έκαναν μάλλον να μετανιώσω για την επιλογή μου:
1. Την πρώτη φορά που τα ενεργοποιείς (τα βάζεις στο ρεύμα και πλησιάζεις το iphone / ipad κοντά είσαι υποχρεωμένος να τα συνδέσεις στο ίδιο wifi με τις εν λόγω συσκευές. Παίρνουν αυτόματα όποια ip θέλουν και δεν υπάρχει κανένα περιθώριο για customization.
2. Είσαι υποχρεωμένος να ενεργοποιήσεις το apple home και ως προεπιλογή προτείνουν να ακούν συνέχεια για να μπορείς να ζητάς από το siri πράγματα. Goodbye privacy.
3. Σκέφτηκα ότι θα τα μπλοκάρω από firewall αυτά που δεν μου αρέσουν και συνέχισα. Προσοχή όμως, αν δεν γνωρίζετε δικτυακά, είναι σα να έχεις wiretap σπίτι σου by default.
4. Όταν συνέδεσα το δεύτερο, μου είπε αν θέλω να τα κάνω στέρεο set. Είπα ναι και κόλλησαν σε ένα configuration loop.
5. Τελικά, ψάχνοντας online τα έκανα factory reset και τα συνέδεσα με το laptop μου (έχουν usb c καλώδιο). Έκανα firmware update το οποίο ήταν 3.5gb και έκανε ώρα να εγκατασταθεί. Ευτυχώς που είχα μακ, γιατί με linux δεν είχα μέλλον.
Από εκείνο το σημείο και μετά, τα είδε το apple tv και είχα το experience που περιμένεις από ένα apple προϊόν (με την καλή έννοια το γράφω). Δεν έχουν spotify connect, αλλά έχει το apple tv οπότε προσωπικά δεν με ενδιαφέρει. Παίζουν πολύ ωραία σε stereo mode επίσης.
Γενικά μπορώ να πω ότι απογοητεύτηκα πολύ από τα παραπάνω και χρειάστηκε κάποιο network configuration από πλευράς των άλλων συστημάτων μου:
- έβαλα dhcp reservations για τα mac addresses τους (edit: άχρηστο, δες παρακάτω)
- συνέδεσα στο ίδιο network το iphone και το apple tv, μέχρι να κάνω configure mDNS forwarders (που αν το έχει κάνει κανείς, δεν είναι διασκεδαστικό)
- διάφορα επιπλέον routing και firewall πράγματα για να ενταχθούν με τον τρόπο που θέλω στο δίκτυό μου αλλά και να έχω privacy.
Όμως, η ποιότητα του ήχου είναι πολύ καλή. Θαυμάσια μπορώ να πω. Βάζω 3 αστέρια για να είμαι δίκαιος, αφού πολλούς δεν τους απασχολούν τα παραπάνω. Αντικατέστησα wired ηχεία αρκετά πιο ακριβά και ο ήχος ίσως να είναι και καλύτερος.
Δεν πιστεύω ότι θα τα αγόραζα αν τα ήξερα όλα αυτά.

Είδατε τι γράφω παραπάνω για mac address reservations? Η Apple, επειδή apparently είναι μια συσκευή που την πηγαίνεις πέρα δώθε σε πολλαπλά δίκτυα, κάνει randomize το mac address για να σου ζαλίζει το συκώτι λίγο παραπάνω. Ένας τρόπος να του δώσεις την ip που θέλεις είναι να σηκώσεις radius ή γενικά κάποιο auth πράγμα. Ένας άλλος να πας λίγο πιο high level είναι να κάνεις assign την ip σε αυτό που πιστεύει το router σου ότι είναι το device (με βάση το hostname νομίζω γίνεται αυτό αλλά είχα ήδη βαρεθεί και δεν το έψαξα), χωρίς mac address binding. ΕΛΕΟΣ.

Το Apple TV φαίνεται να λειτουργεί ως Thread Border Router και πιθανώς χρησιμοποιεί NAT64 ή κάποιο άλλο μηχανισμό proxying για να διατηρεί τα HomePods ορατά στο LAN μέσω IPv4.
Τα είχα αφήσει σε ένα δικό τους VLAN και δεν ασχολούμουν περαιτέρω, έκανα mDNS forwarding. Το θυμήθηκα πάλι και έριξα μια ματιά.
- Υποθέτω ότι η Apple έχει εφαρμόσει ένα dual-stack bridging σύστημα μεταξύ Thread και Wi-Fi μέσω του Apple TV (αυτό που αναφέρω στην αρχή)
- Όταν τα HomePods συνδέονται μέσω Thread αντί Wi-Fi, σταματούν να παίρνουν IP από το DHCP του router και βασίζονται σε IPv6 routing.
- Τα hostnames που είχα ορίσει επαναφέρονται σε “Apple HomePod” τυχαία, κάτι που πιθανότατα συνδέεται με iCloud device sync και όχι αποκλειστικά με το Thread network.
- Οι IPs αλλάζουν και δεν υπάρχει τρόπος να τα δέσω σε σταθερό hostname, γιατί η Apple κάνει randomize τα MAC addresses...
Μετά από reset του Apple TV, τα hostnames και οι IPs επιστρέφουν προσωρινά στο κανονικό τους configuration, και το router μπορεί να τα αναγνωρίσει σωστά. Όμως, μόλις τα HomePods συνδεθούν ξανά στο Thread network, τα προβλήματα επανέρχονται.
Επιπλέον, τα HomePods δεν αλλάζουν πάντα άμεσα από Wi-Fi σε Thread – η μετάβαση φαίνεται να γίνεται τυχαία ή υπό συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες, και μετά από επανεκκίνηση του Apple TV μπορεί να παραμείνουν προσωρινά στο Wi-Fi.
Εν ολίγοις: Αν έχεις HomePods και Apple TV, δεν έχεις έλεγχο πάνω στις IPs, τα hostnames ή τις MAC addresses τους. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι οποιαδήποτε προσπάθεια να τα εντάξεις σε προσεκτικά ρυθμισμένο δίκτυο είναι από πολύ δύσκολη (πχ network auth) έως μάταιη.

If you want a party in a huge house with 15-20 people shouting, etc., then it is not suitable, but for a living room or a large room to listen to music even at 70-80% volume, it is just fine without distortion and it sounds quite loud. Another issue I want to mention is not to place it on various bases available in the market because it affects the sound quality. The best option recommended by Apple is a wooden surface about 20-25 centimeters away from the wall because it is designed with the speaker facing downwards for proper reflection. And to conclude, I would say that the price, which is around 90€ in a major chain, is very good compared to a decent Bluetooth speaker that costs 100-150€.

Καταρχήν επειδή ορισμένοι ρωτάνε αν είναι φορητό η απάντηση είναι όχι δεν είναι. δεν έχει μπαταρία και θέλει μονημα πρίζα.
από εκεί και πέρα μέσω Homekit και Airplay λειτουργεί άψογα μόνο με συσκευές Apple είτε να ελέγχεις διάφορες έξυπνες συσκευές είτε μουσική,Podcast. παίζει μια χαρά και χωρίς συνδρομή Apple Music Internet ραδιόφωνο η μουσική αν έχετε στο iPhone. όποιος έχει Spotify παίζει αρκεί να κάνει την σύνδεση με το ηχείο μέσω Airplay και όχι να το ζητήσει από την Siri γιατί δυστυχώς δεν το υποστηρίζει αλλά μικρό το κακό. τώρα όσο αφορά τον ήχο πραγματικά οποίος λέει ναι μεν αλλά δεν είναι δυνατό κτλπ δεν ισχύει! καταρχήν έχουμε ένα ηχείο που είναι σε μέγεθος πορτοκαλί και πραγματικά παράγει πολύ καλό και καθαρό ήχο και φυσικά μπάσο που σε καμία περίπτωση δεν λες ότι βγαίνει από τέτοιο μέγεθος. αν θες πάρτι σε τεράστιο σπίτι με 15-20 άτομα να φωνάζουν κτλπ ναι δεν κάνει όμως για σαλόνι η μεγάλο δωμάτιο να ακούς μουσικουλα ακόμα και σε ένταση 70-80% είναι μια χαρά χωρίς παραμόρφωση και ακούγεται αρκετά δυνατά. άλλο ένα θέμα που θέλω να πω μην το βάλετε σε διάφορες βάσης που υπάρχουν στο εμπόριο γιατί χαλάει τον ήχο. το καλύτερο που το προτείνει και η Apple είναι ξύλινη επιφάνεια σε απόσταση 20-25 εκατοστά από τοίχο γιατί έχει σχεδιαστεί με το μεγάφωνο προς τα κάτω ανάποδα για σωστή αντανάκλαση. και να κλείσω να πω ότι η τιμή του που είναι στα 90€ σε μεγάλη αλυσίδα είναι πολύ καλή όταν ένα καλούτσικο σκέτο Bluetooth ηχείο έχει 100-150€.

Quite a good speaker both in terms of sound quality and size, and in terms of connectivity. I didn't find it quite responsive in commands, though, but that was purely a Wi-Fi issue since it connects through that and not Bluetooth. It has several functions besides the sound it offers, but only for Apple users, as I believe all Apple products are for such users due to the software. I don't know if any Android device could find it and play music through a familiar network because we don't have anything Android at home. However, I will check and get back to you.

Very good value for what it offers. Definitely not a speaker for music enjoyment, but for playback without many demands, it's great. It has a very nice design, functions as a transmitter for existing devices at home, and overall blends harmoniously in an environment with Apple devices.

Otherwise, it's not worth its money, especially if you live in Greece. Compatibility only with Apple Music, which is unthinkable when other devices have the ability to be compatible with everything. The only reason I don't give it a 5/5 but something that someone who will buy it should pay attention to, is that it cannot connect via classic Bluetooth but only through airplay, which is the standard way of connectivity in the Apple ecosystem, in other words using WiFi. This results in improper playback when the connection is slow. I don't even know if it works with any other device besides Apple that doesn't have airplay and that is bad in itself. Also, because I have it in the office, every time I approach it, it shows a connection indication, which is good only when you actually want to play something, not when it constantly shows it. Otherwise, it's a very cool speaker.
Ο μόνος λόγος που δεν βάζω 5/5 αλλά και κάτι που θα πρέπει να προσέξει κάποιος που θα το αγοράσει, είναι ότι δεν μπορεί να συνδεθεί με το κλασικό Bluetooth αλλά μόνο μέσω airplay που είναι ο στάνταρ τρόπος συνδεσιμότητας στο οικοσυστημα της Apple, δηλαδή με άλλα λόγια χρησιμοποιώντας WiFi. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα όταν είναι αργή η σύνδεση να μη γίνεται σωστά η αναπαραγή. Δεν γνωρίζω καν αν λειτουργεί με άλλη συσκευή πέρα από Apple η οποία δεν θα διαθέτει airplay και αυτό είναι κακό από μόνο του. Επίσης, επειδή το έχω στο γραφείο κάθε φορά που το πλησιάζω βγάζει ένδειξη για σύνδεση, το οποίο είναι καλό μόνο όταν θέλεις όντως να παίξεις κάτι, όχι όταν στο βγάζει συνέχεια. Κατά τ άλλα πολύ cool ηχείο.
Quality. Powerful for its size. Worth it in combination with an Apple Music subscription where everything is available in lossless audio. Homepod mini and Apple Music lossless audio have very good quality. It combines very nicely with Apple TV.
update 14/04/23: Buying a second one is worth it. They connected with each other. They play anything together. Sound upgrade. Louder and higher quality sound. They play very nicely from Apple Music and Apple TV+. They cooperate very nicely with Apple TV and iPad devices, generally with the Apple ecosystem.

update 14/04/23: Αγορά 2ου αξίζει. Έκαναν σύνδεση μεταξύ τους. Παίζουν μαζί οτιδήποτε. Αναβάθμιση του ήχου. Πιο δυνατός ήχος και ποιοτικός. Παίζουν πολύ ωραία από apple music και apple tv+. Συνεργάζονται πολύ ωραία με τις συσκευες apple tv και ipad, γενικά με το οικοσύστημα της apple.
After about 4 years with the HomePod mini, I can't say that I regret buying them (I have 5).
The positives are:
The quality of the build but especially the sound.
Siri for the smart devices in the house.
Sensor for room temperature/humidity.
You can listen to the same music in every room.
You can listen to music in combination with another AirPlay speaker like Sonos.
The negatives:
They are not many watts and do not have strong bass.
Siri does not speak Greek...
The price should be 80-100 euros.

Αισθητήρα για θερμοκρασία/υγρασία δωματίου.
Ακούς την ίδια μουσική σε κάθε δωμάτιο.
Μπορείς να ακούς μουσική σε συνδυασμό με άλλο air play ηχείο όπως τα Sonos.
Στα αρνητικά:
Δεν είναι πολλά watt και δεν έχουν δυνατό μπάσο.
Η Siri δεν μιλάει ελληνικά...
Η τιμή θα έπρεπε να είναι 80-100 ευρώ.
Negatives
1) You need to have an Apple Music subscription for it to take commands
2) Even if you have a subscription (which I do), it doesn't take commands for Greek songs and rarely for a specific track, meaning you have to say play this or that singer or request a foreign song... nothing like Spotify (which I also have a subscription for), which is by far better.
3) If you don't have internet (we had an outage in the neighborhood) it doesn't work, meaning you can't just throw a song via Bluetooth like you would with a simple €5 speaker. What irony that a €150 speaker can't do it but a €5 speaker can.
4) We will have to buy a second speaker from another brand, since quite often we might not have internet. *And with a weak signal it underperforms.

2) και να έχεις συνδρομή(που έχω) δε παίρνει εντολές για ελληνικά τραγούδια και σπάνια και για συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι, δλδ πρέπει να πεις βάλε τον τάδε τραγουδιστή ή ζητήσεις ξένο κομμάτι…καμιά σχέση με το Spotify (που έχω και πάλι συνδρομή) μακράν καλύτερο.
3) αν δεν έχεις ίντερνετ (πάθαμε μια βλάβη στην γειτονιά) δε λειτουργεί δλδ δε μπορεί απλά με Bluetooth να πετάξεις ένα τραγούδι όπως θα έκανε ένα απλό ηχείο των 5€. Τι ειρωνία να μη το κάνει ένα ηχείο των 150€ και να το κάνει ένα ηχείο των 5€
4) αναγκαστικά θα πάρουμε δεύτερη ηχείο άλλης μάρκας, μιας και αρκετές φορές μπορεί να μην έχουμε και ίντερνετ. *Και με ασθενές σήμα υπολειτουργεί.
