Don't tell me that while traveling to some place you haven't wondered "why is it called that?" What lies behind a place name?
Prehistory and history, myths and legends, major events and minor incidents, earth, air, and water, animals and plants, locals and passersby, occupations and peculiarities, religions and languages have left their mark on the multi-layered terrain of place names that make up today's Greece.
The task of recording, preserving, but mainly the effort of etymologizing the place names of our geographical area is a difficult one. Where should one begin?
The first limitation is anthropological place names (oikonyms), that is, place names related to human presence: in villages and neighborhoods, in towns and districts. The second limitation is the Chania region, due to familiarity and love!
There have been revealed unknown, misinterpreted, mysterious elements, some of which may still have mistakes or omissions. This work is open to continuous improvement and enrichment and is receptive to every well-meaning voice.
