Gloflon Venous Catheters with Valve and Wings

Gloflon single-use two-way venous catheters with stainless steel silicone-coated and beveled needle for easy penetration into the patient's vein. Features:

  • Medication injection entry with silicone-coated non-reflux valve and specially designed cap to cover the injection entry to minimize the risk of infection.
  • Angled grooved wings for secure stabilization.
  • Radiopaque line for accurate location detection.
  • Luer cap for locking when the venous catheter is not in use.
  • Color coding.

Indications for Venous Catheter Insertion

  • Administration of intravenous therapy medications.
  • Administration of intravenous fluids-electrolytes.
  • Administration of parenteral nutrition.
  • Blood transfusion-products.
  • Administration of intravenous agents for diagnostic purposes (e.g. contrast agents).

Selection of Veins for Placement

  • Dorsal surface of the hand.
  • Thumb.
  • Foot extremity.

Nurse Responsibilities

  • Selection of appropriate vein.
  • Adherence to principles of asepsis-antisepsis during catheter placement and care.
  • Maintaining the patency of the venous catheter.
  • Proper care of the catheter to prevent complications.
  • Management of complications.

Basic Principles of Venous Catheter Placement

  • Selection of upper limb veins for catheter placement. If a catheter is placed in the lower limbs, it should be replaced with an upper limb catheter as soon as feasible.
  • Selection of catheter size based on purpose, duration of use, and the patient's venous network condition.
  • Daily assessment of the venous catheter insertion site.
  • Removal of the venous catheter if the patient shows signs of phlebitis or infection.
  • Replacement of the venous catheter should not occur more frequently than every 72-96 hours.
  • Smaller-sized venous catheters cause less irritation to the endothelial cells of the veins. Select the smallest size necessary to meet the patient's needs.
