Surgical tweezers can generally be divided into two categories: thumb tweezers and ring tweezers. The thumb tweezers are spring-loaded tweezers used for grasping, holding, or manipulating body tissue. Hemostatic tweezers are articulated and used with or without a "lock" for tightening. Thumb tweezers are available with a variety of tips, such as flat or serrated.

The serrations actually cause less damage than flat tweezers because they require less pressure to maintain a secure grip. Use smooth or cross tweezers for removing stitches or other curtains. Commonly used thumb tweezers include Adson tweezers, Iris tweezers, and Foester tweezers.

The locking tweezers may be called clamps and are used to hold tissue.
