Description

Description

Originally published in 1982, Stephen Shore's legendary work, Uncommon Places, has influenced a generation of photographers. Among the first artists to move color beyond the realm of advertising and fashion photography, Shore's large format color work on the American vernacular landscape lies at the root of a vital photographic tradition that has developed over the past thirty years. Uncommon Places: The Complete Works is the definitive collection of this historic series. A text by renowned critic and curator Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen and a conversation with Shore by novelist Lynne Tillman examine his methodology, clarifying its roots in the pop and conceptual art movements of the late '60s and early '70s. The texts are accompanied by reproductions from Shore's previous series, American Surfaces and Amarillo: Tall in Texas.
