Description

Description

In Greece, with the development of Ottoman studies, for researchers dealing with the Ottoman period, a good knowledge of the Ottoman language is a prerequisite for engaging with this specific field, as almost all of the sources they need to refer to have been written in Ottoman. This makes it difficult to access Ottoman sources and hinders the utilization of the required material. Therefore, the Ottoman language becomes a unique historical tool for understanding and comprehending Ottoman reality, specifically Ottoman society, structures, institutions of the Ottoman state, and relevant sources related to Muslim and non-Muslim populations within the Ottoman Empire. In Greece, knowledge of Ottoman language serves not only the purpose of utilizing and studying historical Ottoman sources but also aims to understand and comprehend the rich Ottoman archival material found in archives and libraries, as well as scattered documents mainly related to legal matters of property and land ownership, especially in the New Lands. Additionally, it includes judicial decisions of the muftis of Thrace, which continue to be issued in the Ottoman language based on international treaties. The second volume in the appendices includes an interpretative word list in Greek with relevant comments. The appendices also include terms and main names related to provincial and local administration of the Ottoman Empire, as well as a list of bishops, archbishops, and metropolitans of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and metropolitans of the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Antioch. It also includes relevant tables of geographical place names, as well as positions in the central and provincial administration of the Ottoman Empire. Finally, it mentions the footnotes of both volumes and relevant abbreviations. The present dictionary by Ioannis Chloros is revived more than a century after its first edition through a reprint by the publishing house Herodotus, which deserves congratulations for its meticulous work.
