Lindenhol smells this morning; soot and dirt and, inexplicably, nutmeg. Dr. Pike had been in the bedroom all night with Alice and had already expelled Abel four times from the room with a wave of his fleshy hand in the air, and with greasy, reassuring words. It was Alice's aunt who insisted on involving this pompous "mama for distinguished ladies," but Abel hated him from the very beginning; the guy had something bovine about him, he was bulky, slow, and awkward, so he didn't seem like a person suitable for the secrets of a lady. Fear has taken hold of him during all these endless hours of his wife's labor. In his last expulsion, not even an hour earlier, she was too weak to even give him a faint smile. "Go away, Abel, go away," she muttered, and he then felt how disappointed she was with him; with everything. Abel has stopped thinking of the unborn creature as something hopeful and innocent, and has begun to see it as a demon that, with its devilish claws, struggles to emerge from his wife's belly.
