Description & Specifications

Xenophon of Athens was a student of Socrates and a philosopher. He wrote two of the works included in this volume, the dialogue Hiero and the treatise Constitution of the Lacedaemonians. The third work, the Constitution of the Athenians, is transmitted in the manuscript tradition under a false name, attributed to Xenophon, alongside the authentic works of the author.

Although all three works each represent a different system of governance (the rule of one man, a tyrant or monarch; the constitution dominated by law, according to the mixed constitution of ancient Sparta; and the power of the masses expressed by Athenian democracy), they are nonetheless characterized by a plethora of correlations.

This volume includes an introduction to Xenophon's views on governance in the light of the author's overall political thought, with a special emphasis on the Memorabilia, a work centered on Xenophon's memories of his great teacher, as well as the ancient text of the three works under discussion alongside an interpretative annotation, which is primarily addressed to advanced undergraduate students and graduates of classical studies.
