This book focuses on the analysis of the homonymous tragedy by Euripides, "Helen".

The main peculiarity of this particular work, which the book examines, is the radical version of the myth adopted by Euripides:

  • The Phantom: The real Helen never went to Troy with Paris. The gods (specifically Hermes, on Hera's orders) transported her to Egypt, where she lived under the protection of King Proteus.
  • The Trojan War: The war in Troy was fought over a "phantom", a ghost of Helen created by the gods.
  • The Plot: The tragedy begins in Egypt, years after the Trojan War. Proteus has died and his son, Theoclymenus, is pressuring Helen to marry him. She finds refuge at Proteus' tomb. Then, Menelaus, shipwrecked, arrives in Egypt, where he meets the real Helen, leading to a dramatic recognition scene and, ultimately, an escape plan.

The school book includes selected passages from the original ancient text, their translation, introductory notes, and interpretative comments that help students understand the plot, the characters, and the deeper meanings of the work (such as the critique of war and the distinction between "appearance" and "reality").
