The marbling technique is inspired by the ancient Japanese marbling method on rice paper from the 11th century (Sumi nagashi) and similar bookbinding techniques in Europe during the 19th century. It is the process of transferring colors by contact of the object to be decorated. Marbling can be used on surfaces such as fabrics, paper, cardboard, recycled paper, wood, plaster, etc. On fabric, iron the fabric after dyeing to set the colors.

The bowl with the marbling thickening medium can be used multiple times for continuous projects. However, it is recommended to use a small amount of thickening agent and change the water frequently. It is advisable to do test runs before decorating the final item. The medium is intended for preparing the bowl with water and colors. Available in 9 colors.

Preparation Instructions for the Bowl and Marbling Technique

• The bowl with the thickening agent and water should be prepared in advance.
• Pour 2 teaspoons (7g) of Pebeo Marbling Thickening Medium into 1 liter of cold water.
• Mix very well and let the mixture sit for 2 hours.
• Pour 1 to 2 centimeters of the mixture into a plastic bowl or tray larger than the object you want to decorate.
• Using the dropper, add a few drops of your chosen colors into the water. It is ideal to alternate between light and dark colors.
• Allow the colors to spread slightly before using a stick or straw to create your patterns.
• You can create various designs with the stick, such as stripes, combed patterns, etc.
• Once you have finished your desired patterns, very carefully place the object, paper, or fabric onto the surface of the mixture.
• Let it sit for 10 to 15 seconds and then remove it.
• Quickly rinse with water to remove any excess mixture, gel, or leftover colors.
• Place the decorated item on a flat surface and let it dry.
