The JH Set is a completely new dimension for EMG, with the design being exclusively influenced by James Hetfield's input. In early 2009, James Hetfield contacted EMG Pickups president Rob Turner and presented a challenge: to create a set with a "stealth" appearance that reflects the clarity and energy of a passive pickup, while still maintaining the legendary active sound that shaped a generation.
The set includes the JH-N (for the neck position) and JH-B (for the bridge). Both pickups are designed based on the pickups James has used for over 30 years, but the final result is entirely different.
- The JH-N features individual ceramic poles and coils with a larger core and taller height than the 60, providing more success, higher output, and a fuller bass in the neck position.
- The JH-B uses the same type of core but has solid steel parts, unlike the 81 which uses bar magnets. This produces the well-known tight success with less induction for a cleaner bass.
