Description & Specifications

The touching narrative of a poor childhood in Liverpool during the 1930s, and the remarkable first volume of autobiography. A bestseller from the day of its publication in February 1993. One of the most shocking yet comforting books you will ever read.

Anyone who has enjoyed Frank McCourt's books will be equally moved by this wonderful testimony that highlights the courage of a young girl.

When Helen Forrester's father declared bankruptcy in 1930, she and her six siblings were forced to leave the comfortable middle-class life they enjoyed in southern England and find themselves in absolute poverty in a North hit hard by the depression. The management of the household, in dire conditions and with little food, as well as the care of the younger children, was shouldered by twelve-year-old Helen. She writes about her experiences without self-pity, but with rich humor, which makes her narrative of these dark days simultaneously touchingly funny and shockingly chilling.
