  • Thin walls with high flow capability, without flow fluctuations and irritations.
  • Smooth surface for ease of use.
  • Specially designed tip and bevel for minimal trauma during venipuncture.
  • “Grip” design for one-handed venipuncture.
  • Flexible wings for better adaptation.
  • Hydrophobic blood stopcock to prevent leakage.
  • Threaded luer-lock delivery connection.
  • Removable protection cone of the catheter.
  • Color-coded sizes for easy identification.

The use of a venous catheter is indicated for:

  • Administration of medications and intravenous therapy.
  • Administration of intravenous fluids and electrolytes.
  • Administration of parenteral nutrition.
  • Blood transfusion and derivatives.
  • Diagnostic purposes with intravenous agents, such as contrast media.

For the placement of a venous catheter, the following veins are selected:

  • Dorsal surface of the wrist.
  • Forearm.
  • Foot.

The nurse must:

  • Select an appropriate vein.
  • Adhere to aseptic principles during catheter insertion and care.
  • Maintain catheter patency.
  • Ensure prevention of complications.
  • Address complications.

Basic principles for venous catheter placement:

  • Select a vein from the upper limb for catheter placement.
  • Select catheter size based on purpose and duration of use.
  • Daily assessment of the insertion site.
  • Remove the catheter in case of phlebitis or infection.
  • Ensure that smaller-sized venous catheters cause less irritation.
