Traditionally, Christians view Satan as Lucifer, the enemy of God, who rebelled against Him out of pride and subsequently led Adam and Eve into sin. However, as Kelly shows, this depiction is not biblical, but a scenario invented by the early Church Fathers, which became the 'New Biography of Satan'. The 'True Biography' must be reconstructed from the New Testament, where Satan is the same type of heavenly being we see in the Book of Job - appointed to govern the world, specifically to watch and test humanity.
He is, however, harsh and deceptive in his methods, and Jesus predicts that his power will soon come to an end. Kelly identifies the further developments of the 'New Biography': the inherited guilt of humanity, captivity by Satan, and punishment in Hell at his hands.
