Oregano is a fragrant plant from the mint family (Lamiaceae – Labiatae) that thrives in warm climates of western and southwestern Europe and the Mediterranean. It grows up to 60 cm tall, with opposite leaves and small white or purple flowers.
Its use is widespread in Greek and Italian cuisine, while its characteristic aroma and flavor harmoniously complement dishes such as the classic Greek salad and pizza. To preserve its flavors, it should be added at the end of the cooking process.
Among the 256 herbs used by Hippocrates for therapeutic purposes, oregano was considered ideal for addressing stomach disorders and respiratory diseases.
Oregano has a strong antioxidant action due to its high content of phenols and flavonoids. It is reported to be therapeutic for disorders of the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the nervous system, and can be consumed as tea (infusion, decoction) or applied externally in the form of an ointment.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. It is always recommended to consult a doctor before taking them.
