Lemon balm or balm (Melissa officinalis) is a plant from the mint family, thriving in Southern Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean. The entire plant is useful.
Lemon balm has many uses and in modern herbal medicine, it is primarily used for addressing disorders of the nervous system and preventing the development of ulcers. It is an anxiolytic and a mild sedative, helping to manage anxiety and tension, and it is also effective in cases of insomnia.
Its effects are primarily attributed to the rosmarinic acid contained in the herb. It is also used to address gastrointestinal discomfort and appears to provide protection against ulcers. Consumption of lemon balm has been shown to increase the secretion of prostaglandin E2 and mucin by the body, while simultaneously reducing acid secretion.
To prepare an infusion, add 2 teaspoons of the dried herb to a cup and fill with boiling water. Let it steep for 10-15 minutes, strain, and consume 3 times a day.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. It is always recommended to seek a doctor's advice before taking them.
