Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial plant of the Greek flora. The name is due to the sweet taste of the roots. It can reach a height of 1 meter, is smooth and strong, with a woody base.
In modern herbal medicine, licorice is considered a valuable remedy. The glycyrrhizin it contains releases glycyrrhetic acid, which has a similar chemical structure to that of adrenal hormones, thus explaining its strong anti-inflammatory action, similar to that of cortisone.
It helps in the treatment of sore throat, cough, and asthma, as it has expectorant and soothing properties. From the concentrated juice of its root, a form known as 'yampol' is produced, which is used to make some commercial lozenges for throat relief.
Licorice is an effective remedy for the digestive system. It acts as a mild laxative and reduces acidic stomach levels, alleviating heartburn. It has a remarkable ability to heal stomach ulcers, as it creates a protective layer over the stomach walls. Glycyrrhizin is often used in the preparation of ulcer medications and reduces colon spasms.
To prepare a warm drink for a sore throat, cough, or stomachache, use one tablespoon of licorice for one cup of water. Let it steep for 5 minutes in boiling water and strain. It is recommended to drink two to three cups a day.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. It is always advisable to consult your doctor before taking them.
