Description

The "Sonata for Cello and Piano" by Debussy was written in the summer of 1915. It was the first of a planned series of six sonatas for various instruments, of which Debussy ultimately completed only three. Due to its undeniable charm, this work has established itself as a cornerstone of the repertoire since its first performance and is undoubtedly the most frequently performed cello sonata of the 20th century.

The Urtext edition by Regina Back includes, for the first time, sketches by Debussy from a private collection, which not only contain a significant note from the composer regarding the balance of the instruments but are also used to clarify certain musical contradictions in the manuscript and the first edition.

The Urtext edition by Bärenreiter is accompanied by an introduction (German / English / French), which addresses not only the genesis and early performances of the composition but also contains information regarding practical aspects of performance.
